MANDIBULAR BODY OSTECTOMY FOR CORRECTION OF MANDIBULAR PROGNATHISM

Abstract
The ramus surgery is principally used for correction of mandibular prognathism, but there are some indications for the body ostectomy technique. The primary necessity for considering mandibular body ostectomy is an acceptable Class III posterior occlusion or one that can readily be made acceptable by routine orthodontic treatment. And when existing posterior edentulous spaces are present, it is best treated by body ostectomy to correct the prognathism and simultaneously close the edentulous space or shorten the span ->of needed prosthetic replacement.
Since Blair¢¥s first description of this operation in 1907, various modifications have been applied and, in 1961, Burch and associates established a standard procedure of one stage intraoral body osteotomy.
We had treated six patients with dentofacial deformities by mandibular body ostectomy with or without other procedures. The result were good both esthetically. and functionally.
